Joe Cornish Heading for a Snow Crash

Film News

by Andrew Mack, June 14, 2012 11:38 PM

Cornish-Snow-Crash.jpg

The writer and director of Attack the Block, Joe Cornish, is going to tackle one of the most beloved titles in the cyberpunk sub genre. Neil Stephenson's novel?Snow Crash.?

The book is set in the near future, when the U.S. exists as a patchwork of corporate-franchise city-states, and private enterprise and the mafia control everything. The plot involves a computer virus that is manifested as a drug called Snow Crash that is transmitted visually from computer screens to unsuspecting users, frying their brains. Hiro Protagonist - that's the character's name - a computer hacker/samurai swordsman/pizza delivery driver who investigates and tries to stop the takeover of postmodern civilization.

God help you Cornish if you get this wrong. I. Love. This. Book. I read it at least once a year and I cannot fathom how you are going to do it. There is so much to cover. Rat Things. The Metaverse. The gatling gun called Reason. Y.T's skateboard and harpoon. Oh. I want to see all of this and more. This is one of those projects that I will scrutinize the most because of how much I love this book.?

At least they haven't asked you to adapt Stephenson's?The Diamond Age where information was transmitted during acts of sexual intercourse. I think that is one for a different kind of film industry.?

Summer Barbecue / Grilling Guide - Low Sodium Blog

If you?re in need a of a little extra low-sodium summer mojo, read on!

We?ve compiled a list of five of our favorite low-sodium summertime?barbecue/grilling recipes.?Mix up your summer grill with chicken, fish, or oysters ? and compliment it with a remoulade (a tasty alternative to coleslaw) or fresh fruit salsa. We think our recipes make for a perfect summer?picnic or party. ?We?ve ?stealth fully? tested out our recipes on on friends and neighbors, not telling them it was ?low sodium?, and received comments like ? wow, this is RAD?.

Get your BBQ on!

Chicken

Cajun Chicken - Sizzling hot! The same spices for blackened chicken can be used for grilling on the fire (instead of a cast iron pan). Mixed in advance, our Cajun spices pack up nicely for car camping as well. We typically serve this with a mango salsa (recipe below).

BBQ Beer Can Chicken Recipe. Literally, this is one of our most favorite recipes. We had our neighbors over this past weekend and we barbecued separate chickens for each family. Self-service could not not be easier - we "plated" each roasted chicken on a large carving board (the left-overs were taken home by each family) - making clean up a breeze!

Salmon

Cedar Plank Salmon with Pluot Glaze. Grilling on a cedar plank (one time use) is another fun and easy thing to do - that adds a lot of flavor complexity. If it's your first time grilling with cedar planks, you'll want to keep in mind that the wood at the lumber yard usually is sprayed with chemicals, making it unusable for cooking. Be sure to use wood planks that are specifically marked "for culinary use".

This simple baked salmon recipe can be adapted for the cedar plank (instructions on how to use a cedar plank are part of the pluot recipe above)

Oysters

Freshly grilled oysters are our favorite! Grilling oysters is a quick and easy! We whipped up a simple ginger-citrus dipping sauce that's pairs well with oysters.

Remoulade

C?leri R?moulade (celeriac / celery root remoulade) makes a nice and refreshing alternative to coleslaw.

Salsas

Tantalizing Mango Salsa! Along with our favorite fruit based salsa recipe, there's also a link to "How to Pick and Cut the Best Mangoes"

Grilled Pineapple Salsa. Grilling helps to bring out and highlight the sweet flavor notes, giving us more flavor.

Romney's Voucher Plan Puts Public Schools at Risk | Crooks and ...

For Mitt Romney, the love that dare not speak its name is "vouchers." Two weeks after he delivered a major address on education policy in which he never mentioned the V word, the New York Times detailed Romney's proposal to divert $25 billion in taxpayer dollars to religious, private and for-profit schools. But voters don't have to imagine what that plan, an old GOP twofer designed to subsidize Christian institutions while bludgeoning Democratic-friendly teachers unions, will do to American public education. As the frightening results in states like Louisiana, Indiana, Georgia and Arizona show, the Republican voucher dream is fast becoming America's nightmare present.

Governor Romney has been an advocate of so-called "school choice" since his first run for the White House. In 2007, Romney suggested American parents should not only be encouraged to abandon the public schools; they should be rewarded for it with a tax break for home schooling their kids:

"I also believe parents who are teaching their kids at home, homeschoolers, deserve a break, and I've asked for a tax credit to help parents in their homes with the cost of being an at-home teacher."

Now, as the Republican nominee outlined in a recent speech to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Romney wants to redirect $25 billion from two federal programs into a new voucher scheme. As the New York Times explained:

As president, Mr. Romney would seek to overhaul the federal government's largest programs for kindergarten through 12th grade into a voucherlike system. Students would be free to use $25 billion in federal money to attend any school they choose -- public, charter, online or private -- a system, he said, that would introduce marketplace dynamics into education to drive academic gains.

But as the experience in Indiana and Louisiana suggests, that system would instead introduce large quantities of public cash into the coffers of religious schools and academies whose educational credentials may be suspect at best.

In "Vouchers Breathe New Life into Shrinking Catholic Schools," the Wall Street Journal last week revealed that Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels' voucher program is proving a major boon to the bishops supposedly concerned about government mandates. "Driven by expanding voucher programs, outreach to Hispanic Catholics and donations by business leaders," WSJ reported, "Catholic schools in several major cities are swinging back from closures and declining enrollment." For example:

Thanks to vouchers, St. Stanislaus, which was $140,000 in debt to the Catholic Diocese of Gary at the end of 2010, picked up 72 new students, boosting enrollment by 38%.

"God has been good to us," says Ms. [Principal Kathleen] Lowry. "Growth is a good problem to have."

Mark Gray of the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University explained why.

As the Journal noted, getting more students enrolled in Catholic schools is "clearly one of the top priorities" for the church as it tries to get more faithful back into the pews. As Gray put it, "There is an important long-term effect on the Catholic population by having them in schools."

Of course, there is an important effect on public schools as well.

Critics, including teacher unions, say vouchers drain resources from public schools, siphon off the brightest students with the most engaged parents, and, in the case of Catholic schools, violate the separation of church and state by sending tax dollars to religious institutions...Krista Stockman, spokeswoman for the nearby public school district Fort Wayne Community Schools, which lost nearly 400 students and $4.2 million in state funding to vouchers--more than any district in the state--says it is tough for her schools to compete. "There's this unfair perception out there that all private schools are better than public schools," she says.

That's certainly not the case in Bobby Jindal's Louisiana, where voucher-receiving institutions must be blessed by the state. As the Daily Kingfish noted, over 90 percent of the 115 schools qualifying for Jindal's $8.500 voucher are religious institutions. And as Reuters documented, many of the 7,450 slots reserved for voucher students are at some pretty suspect schools:

The school willing to accept the most voucher students -- 314 -- is New Living Word in Ruston, which has a top-ranked basketball team but no library. Students spend most of the day watching TVs in bare-bones classrooms. Each lesson consists of an instructional DVD that intersperses Biblical verses with subjects such chemistry or composition.

The Upperroom Bible Church Academy in New Orleans, a bunker-like building with no windows or playground, also has plenty of slots open. It seeks to bring in 214 voucher students, worth up to $1.8 million in state funding.

At Eternity Christian Academy in Westlake, pastor-turned-principal Marie Carrier hopes to secure extra space to enroll 135 voucher students, though she now has room for just a few dozen. Her first- through eighth-grade students sit in cubicles for much of the day and move at their own pace through Christian workbooks, such as a beginning science text that explains "what God made" on each of the six days of creation. They are not exposed to the theory of evolution.

"We try to stay away from all those things that might confuse our children," Carrier said.

Meanwhile in places like Arizona and Georgia, Republican governors and legislatures are trying to confuse taxpayers and the United States Supreme Court. In April 2011, a 5-4 majority upheld an Arizona law which tried to evade the voucher controversy by giving gives taxpayers there a dollar-for-dollar state tax credit of up to $500 for donations to private "student tuition organizations." The organizations are permitted to limit the scholarships they offer to schools of a given religion, and many of them do. While Justice Anthony Kennedy's majority opinion claimed "awarding some citizens a tax credit allows other citizens to retain control over their own funds in accordance with their own consciences," dissenting Justice Elena Kagan saw through the fa?ade. As the New York Times noted:

Justice Elena Kagan, in her first dissent, said the majority had laid waste to the doctrine of "taxpayer standing," which allows suits from people who object to having tax money spent on religious matters. "The court's opinion," Justice Kagan wrote, "offers a road map -- more truly, just a one-step instruction -- to any government that wishes to insulate its financing of religious activity from legal challenge."

Georgia provides a case in point for the insulation of government financial of religious activity from legal challenge. There, a $50 million program supposedly offering $2,500 tax credits for donations to "nonprofit scholarship groups" to help poor and needy children turned into something else altogether. Instead, the New York Times documented last month, the Georgia program became just another vehicle to siphon government funds into non-secular schools:

That was the idea, at least. But parents meeting at Gwinnett Christian Academy got a completely different story last year.

"A very small percentage of that money will be set aside for a needs-based scholarship fund," Wyatt Bozeman, an administrator at the school near Atlanta, said during an informational session. "The rest of the money will be channeled to the family that raised it."

...Most of the private schools are religious. Nearly a quarter of the participating schools in Georgia require families to make a profession of religious faith, according to their Web sites. Many of those schools adhere to a fundamentalist brand of Christianity. A commonly used sixth-grade science text retells the creation story contained in Genesis, omitting any other explanation. An economics book used in some high schools holds that the Antichrist -- a world ruler predicted in the New Testament -- will one day control what is bought and sold.

Of course, what is being bought and sold is our children's future. According to the Alliance for School Choice, in this year alone eight states "the programs redirected nearly $350 million that would have gone into public budgets to pay for private school scholarships for 129,000 students." Mitt Romney's ideology notwithstanding, education is not (or at least, shouldn't be) a free-market where parents purchase a product called test scores. But if it were, it would be a case of market failure. As Stephanie Mencimer pointed out, the dubious performance and questionable financial practices of charter schools has them in hot water with federal investigators. As the Washington Monthly detailed in April 2008, voucher programs in Cleveland and Milwaukee failed to produce better performance in the private versus public schools. (70 percent of students in the Milwaukee program attend religious institutions.) As the American Prospect reported last year:

In Milwaukee, home of the oldest city voucher program in the country, researchers are in the middle of the five-year study of the program that is expected to shed light on the potential of voucher programs. But three years into the study, results are unimpressive. High school graduation and college enrollment are up 5 percent to 7 percent among voucher recipients, but overall performance between public school and voucher recipient cohorts is virtually the same.

It's no wonder Christopher Lubienski, an education professor at the University of Illinois, concluded that "Romney is on poor empirical ground in making a claim based on competitive effect." But for Mitt Romney, vouchers are all about bashing teachers' unions ("In 2008, the National Education Association spent more money on campaigns than any other organization in the country...and 90% of those funds went to Democrats") and putting public dollars in private pockets (as he did by endorsing the for-profit and Romney-donor Full Sail University).

Even, that is, if Mitt Romney is afraid to say the word "vouchers."

How & Why GPS Offers Affordable Fleet Tracking | Conservator

There are more and more companies that are turning to Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to find out where their fleet vehicles are or have been. GPS is a satellite-based navigation system that reports the location, speed and direction of a vehicle anywhere on the globe. Unlike cellular communications, that often experience dead spots, GPS receivers and satellites are always capable of maintaining strong locks, even in regions with dense foliage or urban settings with tall buildings.

The benefits of GPS fleet tracking include:

Can Help Control labor costs:

GPS tracking helps companies get a lock on labor costs, as well as extreme overtime costs. Employees typically keep their own vehicle history records and write their hours on a timecard each week voluntarily. With a GPS system, those timecards are replaced by precise printed reports downloaded directly from a computer, with a history list of each vehicle from the time it started its route, to the time it finished. You will also know how many stops it made and the length of each stop. Thus all employee time can be verified and analyzed.

Increases Fleet Efficiency:

With GPS tracking data you can determine an individual or group?s average length of a service stop; or analyze a service stop vs. non-service stop; or the actual length of a service call or installation. Corrective measures based on this information gets job productivity up and wasted time and inefficiency down.

Can Help Lower your fuel bills:

GPS tracking information attacks high fuel bills in three areas: Controlling Speeding, Idling and Unauthorized Use. Tracking data is captured for all three items allowing fleet managers to take steps to address these and measure the results of their actions.

Can Help Lower Insurance Bills:

As a result, fuel consumption and costs can drop dramatically. Speeding increases your maintenance, fleet insurance premiums, fuel expense, gas mileage and your liability should an accident occur. With GPS tracking there is no need to rely on the public to report unsafe drivers. You will know how your vehicles are being operated and by whom.

Can Control Moonlighting of Employees:

GPS tracking units monitor who, what, where and when your vehicles are or have been. This puts controls on unauthorized usage and moonlighting. Can also help prevent theft of cargo.

Ensures Vehicle & Cargo Security:

Every year companies lose billions a year because of cargo thefts. Much of this happens during transit, before it is even delivered. Tracking systems can play a major role in preventing both vehicle & cargo thefts as well as aiding in recovery. Systems monitor every move & stop.

Can Resolve billing disputes:

Arrival and departure times are recorded. Determine exactly when your vehicle arrived and departed from a customer address.

The detailed, accurate information available from GPS has made it popular within aviation, sea navigation, various outdoor activities and sports, and automotive vehicles. There are numerous benefits of GPS tracking for managing transportation fleets and the cost has become affordable in recent years.

With all this said, we strongly urge any company with numerous vehicles to consider the many benefits GPS systems offer.

Matthew McConaughey & Camila Alves: Wedding Details

Posted Monday June 11, 2012 8:19 AM GMT

They?ve never been the typical conventional couple, and Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves' wedding was as unique as they are.

The ?Magic Mike? stud and his gorgeous model wife enlisted both a local pastor and a monk to perform the ceremony and opted not to have a bridal party.

An insider told press, ?There were no groomsmen or bridesmaids. They whispered [their vows] in each other?s ears. No one knew what they said. Whatever they said it was very emotional. Camila was tearing up.?

The source added, "The crowd erupted and there were many tears all around. There was a lot of clapping and everyone was happy. Matthew loves her and there is no doubt about that."

In a previous interview, Camila told press, "We've been living a married life for over six years now. We have homes together, we have family together, we have kids, we've built a life together. So we've been living a married life this whole time."

"A lot of people, sometimes they're so stuck on 'I gotta get married, I gotta get married,' that they forget that the really important thing is to have a healthy home, a healthy family, a healthy family for your kids and to have everything going in a good, peaceful way."

History of Springs Episcopal church gains national attention

Want more?:

See a slideshow of the more famous stained glass windows at Grace and St. Stephens Episcopal Church.

Sitting in the choir section of Grace and St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Marianna McJimsey can?t help but get excited when she talks about the history of the place.

The former Colorado College professor and head of the church?s archival project can spout off facts for hours if given the prompt. She?s not the only one who finds the church significant.

The church was recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places, becoming one of a small handful of churches in El Paso County on the list.

On Sunday afternoon, the sound of McJimsey?s voice in the empty church bounced off of the high arches in the sanctuary ? a rare example of gothic revival architecture in Colorado Springs. The light streams in through dozens of intricate stained glass windows, each with a story and commissioned by former parishioners as far back as 1899. And behind her is the large historic organ donated to the church by Alice Bemis Taylor, who also helped create the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.

With all of this history around her, McJimsey wasn?t too surprised when the church was notified that its application to the national list was accepted.

The church had an official ceremony celebrating its designation on June 3.

?We did presume we?d be a good candidate, but were delighted when we found out for sure,? McJimsey said.

The official application process took more than a year, said Charise Boomsma, who owns the business The Preservation Studio and helped the church fill out the paperwork. Parishioners had been doing their own work compiling the church?s history for years. The churhc even has its own book on the stained glass called ?The Windows of Grace and St. Stephen?s Episcopal Chuch?, which was published earlier this year. See a slideshow of significant windows at the church.

To get the national recognition, Boomsma said the church had to prove that the building has both architectural and social significance. The architecture part was easy, Boomsma said.

?For me, the architecture is fantastic,? she said. ?It?s one of the greatest examples of gothic revival we have around here.?

The oldest part of the church was constructed in 1895 and designed by Thomas MacLaren, who helped design dozens of other local buildings including the Colorado Springs City Hall. In 1925, the main sanctuary was built after the city?s two Episcopal churches ? Grace Church and St. Stephen?s Church ? combined.

Soon after, Bemis Taylor gave the church the pipe organ and an endowment to provide the city with free concerts. This is when the church?s true social significance played out, McJimsey said.

Parishioners took the job seriously. Along with the concerts, which continue to this day, the church was also a venue for up-and-coming musical groups that need a place to rehearse and perform, hosting groups including The Colorado Springs Symphony, the Colorado Opera Festival, and the Colorado Vocal Arts Ensemble, McJimsey said.

?This church has always been about more than just us who go here.?

Tiny fraction of required 270 million Facebook users squeak 'no' to changes

tiny-fraction-of-required-270-million-facebook-users

Facebook users rebuked proposed privacy changes in a vote on Friday -- to the tune of 87 percent -- but a thousand times higher turnout was needed for it to matter. As such, the company will likely proceed with the additions, which it said were needed to clarify current policies for European and US regulators. However, the company was sufficiently chastened by the anemic turnout of 342,600 voters to state that it was "pretty disappointing," and spokeswoman Jame Schopflin said in the future, they will consider the vote "advisory" if numbers were too low. Still, groups like Our Policy who started the petition for this referendum might want to pick their battles better next time.

Freezer damages brain samples used to study autism

(AP) ? A freezer malfunctioned at a Harvard-affiliated hospital that oversees the world's largest collection of autistic brain samples, damaging a third of the scientifically precious specimens and casting doubt on whether they can be used in research.

The director of the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center said the loss was "devastating," particularly in light of the increasing demand for brain samples among scientists searching for the cause of autism and potential treatments.

"Over the last 10 years, the autism tissue program has been working very hard to get the autism community to understand the importance of brain donation," Dr. Francine Benes said. Now many of those samples have been compromised.

The freezer failed sometime late last month at the center, which is housed at McLean Hospital in the Boston suburb of Belmont. At least 54 samples earmarked for autism research were harmed. Many of them turned dark with decay.

However, an initial review indicates that the DNA in the samples is intact and can still be used for genetic research. It's unclear, however, whether the samples could be used for the full range of neuroscience needs.

Thirty-two of the brains had been cut in half, with one side placed in a formaldehyde solution and the other placed in the freezer. The samples in the solution remain available for all research projects, the hospital said.

The frozen tissue samples are normally maintained at about minus 80 degrees Celsius, but the temperature had reached about 7 degrees ? the temperature of a common refrigerator ? when the failure was discovered, Benes said.

That means an important chemical cousin of DNA called RNA was destroyed, she said.

Center officials say they've already completed an inspection of the equipment to ensure the safety of the collection.

Dr. Fred Volkmar, an autism researcher and director of the Child Study Center at Yale University, said the damage is even more disheartening given recent advances in autism research.

Some of that research, including autism studies involving stem cells, wasn't even possible at the time when some of the brains were donated.

"We can't always know where the science is going to take us," Volkmar said. "In that respect, it's a horrible loss. The hope is that at least it's not a total disaster."

The hospital launched an investigation to determine why the freezer malfunctioned and why two alarm systems failed to go off as the temperature rose.

Benes said her biggest fear is that the loss of samples could make it harder in the future to encourage brain donation from autistic children and young adults.

"There has been a lot of resistance of brain donations for religious and cultural reasons," she said.

The collection is owned by the advocacy and research organization Autism Speaks.

The Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center is the largest and oldest federally funded "brain bank" in the United States. It provides thousands of postmortem brain tissue samples annually to researchers across the nation.

The story was first reported by The Boston Globe.

Improving Your Home: Useful Tips To Live By - CareCrunch Answers

As any owner is aware, it is expensive to own a home and it takes a lot of work! Annual home improvements can typically cost up to 3% of the home?s value. It is critical to consider and manage the costs of home improvements. The money-saving tips for home improvements contained in this article should help you afford the maintenance required for your home.

Hire a chimney sweep to regularly clean and inspect your chimney. This is very important if you use wood to heat your home, but still important if you do not. You can avoid deadly fumes and prevent chimney fires this way.

Replacing the outlet covers in any room is an inexpensive and easy upgrade. Without you even realizing it, your outlets covers grow discolored over time, giving a dingy look in some cases. Installing new ones can help make everything look fresher.

Applying a fresh coat of paint can provide any room with quite an update at a reasonable price. You can see a wide selection of paint colors at most hardware stores. Find colors you find complementary to your home. If you find that you aren?t thrilled with it, you could just paint over it.

When planning home renovations, use the first portion of the year for planning, as you will likely have considerably less money during this time due to the holiday season. This is due to the fact that you will feel less stressed about the project if you take the time to budget for it while your funds are low.

Getting a great new look in your kitchen doesn?t require a ton of money and replacing everything. Some paint can create a major change. There are a lot of modern finishes you can put on cabinets. Check out the possibilities at various home improvement websites, then go with the one that fits within your style and budget.

Improve the look of your bathroom without spending a lot of time and effort. A new shower curtain, bath mat and towels are probably the simplest way to remake your bathroom. An instant lift can be achieved using this method. Plants fresh a bathroom, but be certain to select those that are good in high humidity and do not need a lot of light.

Consider installing a shower in your home if none of your existing bathrooms currently have one. Not only is a shower more convenient than a tub, but it also more cost effective. A shower that takes five minutes uses less than a quarter of the water required to fill a tub.

After reading the tips for home improvement discussed in this article, you can rest assured that your next trip to the large home improvement stores won?t break the bank! If you are saving money and making improvements you will enjoy your living space and add some money to your pocket.

(AP) ? Firefighters on Sunday were fighting wildfires that have spread quickly in parched forests in Colorado and New Mexico, forcing hundreds of people from their homes and the evacuation of wolves from a sanctuary.

The Colorado fire, burning in a mountainous area about 15 miles west of Fort Collins, grew to 22 square miles within about a day of being reported and has destroyed or damaged 18 structures.

Strong winds, meanwhile, grounded aircraft fighting a 40-square-mile wildfire near the mountain community of Ruidoso in southern New Mexico. Crews were working to build a fire line around the blaze, which started Friday and has damaged or destroyed 36 structures.

It wasn't immediately clear how many of the structures lost were homes. "We're still trying to take a tally," Kerry Gladden, public information officer for Ruidoso, said late Sunday afternoon.

In Colorado, the fire sent up heavy smoke, obscuring the sun and creating an eerie, orange dusk in the middle of the day. The smell of smoke drifted into the Denver area and smoke spread as far away as central Nebraska, western Kansas and Texas.

The latest New Mexico fire is smaller than the Whitewater-Baldy fire ? the largest in the state's history ? but it's more concerning to authorities because it started closer to homes, said Dan Ware, a spokesman for the New Mexico State Forestry Division. He said the number of Ruidoso evacuees was in the hundreds, but he didn't have an exact figure.

Gladden said preliminary evacuations could be issued for some areas closer to town due to wind shifts.

Karen Takai, a spokeswoman for the Ruidoso fire crews, said smoke is heavily impacting the community of Capitan, about 5 miles to the northeast. She said Capitan and others could also face evacuation.

"Any communities around this fire have the potential of being evacuated," she said. "If I lived in Capitan, I definitely would be prepared. Don't wait until the sheriff's office comes knocking at your door and tells you to evacuate."

Elsewhere Sunday, firefighters were battling a wildfire that blackened 6 square miles in Wyoming's Guernsey State Park and forced the evacuation of between 500 and 1,000 campers and visitors. Cooler weather was helping firefighters in their battle against two other wildfires in southern Utah.

In Colorado, authorities sent nearly 1,800 evacuation notices to phone numbers but it wasn't clear how many residents had to leave. About 500 people had checked in at Red Cross shelters. Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith said there was an unconfirmed report of a person unaccounted for, but he wouldn't elaborate.

Authorities say it's the worst fire seen in Larimer County in about 25 years. It spread as fast as 1 1/2 miles an hour Saturday, skipping over some areas but burning intensely in trees in others. Flames were coming dangerously close to deputies who were telling some residents to evacuate, Smith said.

Kathie Walter and her husband helped friends several miles away evacuate from the Colorado fire on Saturday. When they got home, they were surprised to get a call warning them to be ready to evacuate just in case. But Walter didn't want to wait.

"Smoke was coming in hard. We could not see flames or orange or black smoke. But we didn't need to see anymore. We just said 'Hey, let's get out of here,'" she said.

They evacuated with their five cats and two dogs. They had a head start. After a wildfire in the area last year, they had left two suitcases packed in their garage.

Elaine Mantle and her family got a call to evacuate their Bellvue home at 5:45 a.m. Sunday. It took about 30 minutes for them to get out and reach a spillover shelter at the Budweiser Event Center in Loveland. Evacuees gathered there for a fire briefing, sipping coffee and eating bananas and powdered doughnuts, in a large gymnasium-like space.

It was the Mantles' first evacuation in the 25 years that they have lived in the mountains, and they were grateful to be safe.

"We're all here, we're all OK. Our neighbors are all here. We feel good," Mantle said.

The blaze also forced the evacuation of 11 wolves from a sanctuary near the fire. KUSA-TV in Denver reported that 19 wolves remained behind at the sanctuary, which has underground concrete bunkers known as "fire dens" that can be used by the animals.

The fire is the latest to hit Colorado's drought-stricken Front Range. In May, a fire set by a camper's stove charred 12 square miles in the same Poudre Canyon area. In March, a fire sparked by a prescribed burn 25 miles southwest of Denver killed three people and damaged or destroyed more than two dozen homes.

Eight air tankers ? including two from Canada ? and several helicopters were on the scene to help fight the blaze.

Authorities say they're competing for resources that have been diluted by several wildfires burning across the West.

"Resources are thin right now," said Nick Christensen of the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. "We are trying to get more of everything at this point."

Meanwhile, the speed at which the fire has spread has dashed any hopes of containment for the time being.

"These folks are doing everything they can, but Mother Nature is running this fire," Smith, the sheriff, said.

In New Mexico, the mix of timber, dry grass and the steepness of the slopes were making the firefighting efforts more difficult.

The fire was burning in steep, rocky, inaccessible terrain in the White Mountain Wilderness of the Lincoln National Forest, which is home to Smokey Bear, who became the nation's symbol of fire prevention in the 1940s.

More than 300 firefighters were battling the blaze with help from three large air tankers, three heavy helicopters and three Blackhawk helicopters. There were also 100 National Guard troops in Ruidoso.
