Spain's New Online Gambling Market Tops Targets | Gambling News

spain-online-gambling-adelson-voldemortThe regulated Spanish online gambling market has been open for business since June 2012 and the country?s gaming regulator Direcci?n General de Ordenaci?n del Juego (DGoJ) has dished the dirt on who?s spending how much on what. As reported by El Pa?s, slightly over 1m online players wagered ?2.3b in the first six months of regulation, generating ?88m in gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the holders of the country?s 53 gaming licenses (although three of these license holders ? PokerStars, Bet365 and Bwin.party ? are making much more than the others). The government expects to reap ?140m from the sector in 2012, which is ?40m more than they?d projected. (So, uh, refund? No? No? Bueller?) The online sector currently accounts for just 17% of Spain?s total gambling market, although that should grow sharply with the promised introduction of online slots in 2013.

The most popular (yet least entertaining) form of online gambling in Spain is the lottery, with 69% of gamblers admitting (confessing?) to buying tickets online. Sports betting was the second most popular online activity at 52% participation, while poker was third with 38%. In terms of generating turnover, poker led the pack with a 40% share (?952m), while sports betting was again second with ?861m, casino games third at ?371m and bingo at ?24m. Revenue-wise, sports betting emerged triumphant with ?43.5m, followed by poker (?30.2m), casino (?10.5m) and bingo (?3.7m). Gender-wise, Spain?s online gamblers are 68% male and mostly reside in the 25-44 age group with a university education. The number of online gamblers has reportedly risen five-fold since regulation.

On the offline front, the ruling majority party in Madrid is catching hell for approving regulations that opposition parties say read like a love letter to Las Vegas Sands (LVS). Among the new perks that ?integrated development centers? like LVS? proposed EuroVegas site in Madrid will enjoy are the right to stay open around the clock, the ability to extend credit to players and a tax rate set at 10% of gross income. EuroVegas will also be allowed to offer a broader variety of casino games than casinos outside Madrid.

El Pais reported that the regulations were approved a couple days before New Year?s Eve as part of an unrelated omnibus bill. The reaction from the minority parties can charitably be described as a hissy fit, with the Socialist Party referring to the omnibus bill as providing ?safe passage for corruption? while United Left representatives pulled out the Harry Potter metaphors, calling it the ?Voldemort law.? We guess that?s a thinly veiled slam at LVS supremo Sheldon Adelson, because Voldemort is referred to ?He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named? and Adelson donated most of his estimated $150m in Republican Party 2012 election campaign contributions via 501(c)(4) organizations, which aren?t required to publicly reveal their donors? identities. Anyway, we suspect some legislator is already planning a ?Hermione law? in an ill-advised attempt to meet Emma Watson, who will turn up her perfect nose after being told these Spaniards are only 68% male.

Largest Kansas wind farm now fully operational

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- The largest wind farm ever built in Kansas is now in full commercial operation.

BP Wind Energy and Sempra U.S. Gas & Power said Thursday the $800 million Flat Ridge 2 Wind Farm generates 470 megawatts of electricity.

Flat Ridge 2 is spread over a 66,000-acre site that spans parts of Harper, Barber, Kingman and Sumner counties in south-central Kansas.

The companies say the farm uses 294 turbines each with the capacity to produce 1.6 megawatts, generating enough electricity to power more than 140,000 average American homes.

Power generated from the facility will be exported to Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana.

The project created more than 500 jobs at the peak of construction. About 30 permanent jobs have been created to monitor and maintain it now that it is online.

Research shows using text, color makes food labels easier to understand

Jan. 4, 2013 ? As the spotlight on healthy eating and nutrition grows ever-brighter, new research suggests that including colorful and graphic nutrition information on product packages helps consumers better understand the information.

According to a literature review conducted by RTI International, using text and color to describe the nutrient levels, rather than just numbers, is a more effective way to ensure consumers understand nutritional information.

A team of researchers found that when labels incorporated text and color to indicate "high," "medium" or "low" levels of nutrients, they were easier for consumers to interpret than those that used only numbers, such as grams per serving or percent of Recommended Dietary Allowances.

The literature review, published in the January issue of Nutrition Reviews, systematically analyzed 38 studies on consumer responses to nutrition labels on the front of food packages and on grocery aisle shelves to determine which aspects of labels had the strongest impact on consumer attention, understanding and purchasing behavior.

In general, the studies suggest that labels on the front of food packages and on grocery aisle shelves can help consumers make better food choices. The results may help guide development of nutrition labels that quickly capture the attention of consumers and prompt them to pick healthier foods.

"As standards for nutrition front-of-package and shelf-labeling systems are considered, it is important to know what is most effective in conveying scientifically accurate and useful information to consumers," said James Hersey, Ph.D., a senior scientist at RTI International and lead author of the study.

This review uncovered a number of knowledge gaps. "Although some research suggests that summary systems may influence consumers to purchase healthier products, more research is needed to assess front-of-package and shelf nutrition labels effects on consumers' shopping and eating behaviors," said Kelly Wohlgenant, policy analyst at RTI and the study's co-author.

The authors recommend that for the largest public health impact, nutrition label education and communication efforts should target consumers at high risk of obesity-related illness rather than those who are already focused on nutrition.

Britain's top tabloid scolds Argentina over the Falklands

BUENOS AIRES/LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's biggest-selling newspaper had a simple message for Argentina in an editorial published on Friday in the South American country: "HANDS OFF" the Falkland Islands.

The seven-paragraph epistle, penned by the populist Sun tabloid and published in Argentina's main English language newspaper, came in response to fresh demands from President Cristina Fernandez to open talks over the sovereignty of the South Atlantic archipelago.

The two countries fought a 10-week war in 1982 over the remote islands, which are part of Britain's self-governing overseas territories and are known in Argentina as Las Malvinas.

Britain won the war but Argentina started pressing its sovereignty claim anew last year after oil exploration began in waters near the islands.

"British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands dates back to 1765, before the Republic of Argentina even existed," the Sun said in its open letter to Fernandez, published in both Spanish and English in the Buenos Aires Herald.

"In the name of our millions of readers," the Sun said, "HANDS OFF!"

The Sun, part of media mogul Rupert Murdoch's empire, has a long history of publishing fervently patriotic articles. One of its front pages during the 1982 war it marked the news that British forces had sunk the Argentine warship General Belgrano with the banner headline "GOTCHA."

As the extent of Argentine losses began to emerge, the Sun changed its headline in later editions. A total of 323 Argentines lost their lives in the attack on the Belgrano.

While the rhetoric has yet to reach such levels, tensions have flared between London and Buenos Aires against the new backdrop of oil prospects.

Crude was found to the north of the Falklands in 2010 by Rockhopper Exploration, drawing interest from hedge funds and other investors despite threats from Argentina to disrupt the activity.

In an open letter from Fernandez to Prime Minister David Cameron published in British newspapers on Thursday, the fiery two-term Peronist leader accused Britain of breaching United Nations resolutions calling for a negotiated solution.

Cameron rejects negotiations, saying the approximately 3,000 people of the Falkland Islands have chosen to be British.

In its Friday edition, the Sun used less moderate language for its own British readers than in its open letter to Fernandez, labeling her country a "banana republic."

"Stirring up trouble over the Falklands creates a convenient sideshow for Argentina's tin-pot leaders as they battle problems at home," the Sun said in its editorial, referring to economic woes in Argentina punctuated by slow growth and high inflation.

"But they are wasting their breath. And they should remember what happened last time."

State trying to make sperm donor pay child support

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) ? A Kansas man who donated sperm to a lesbian couple after answering an online ad is fighting the state's efforts to suddenly force him to pay child support for the now 3-year-old girl, arguing that he and the women signed an agreement waiving all of his parental rights.

The case hinges on the fact that no doctors were used for the artificial insemination. The state argues that because William Marotta didn't work through a clinic or doctor, as required by state law, he can be held responsible for about $6,000 that the child's biological mother received through public assistance ? as well as future child support.

Angela de Rocha, spokeswoman for the Kansas Department for Children and Families, said that when a single mother seeks benefits for a child, it's routine for the department to try to determine the child's paternity and require the father to make support payments to lessen the potential cost to taxpayers.

Marotta, a 46-year-old Topeka resident, answered an online ad in 2009 from a local couple, Angela Bauer and Jennifer Schreiner, who said they were seeking a sperm donor. After exchanging emails and meeting, the three signed an agreement relieving Marotta of any financial or paternal responsibility.

But instead of working with a doctor, Marotta agreed to drop off a container with his sperm at the couple's home and the women successfully handled the artificial insemination themselves. Schreiner become pregnant with a girl.

Late last year, after she and Bauer broke up, Schreiner received public assistance from the state to help care for the girl.

The Kansas Department for Children and Families filed a court petition against Marotta in October, asking that he be required to reimburse the state for the benefits and make future child support payments. Marotta is asking that the case be dismissed, arguing that he's not legally the child's father, only a sperm donor.

A hearing is set for Tuesday.

Marotta told The Topeka-Capital Journal that he is "a little scared about where this is going to go, primarily for financial reasons."

His attorney didn't immediately return a phone message Wednesday from The Associated Press, and there was no listing for his home phone number in Topeka. Listings for Schreiner and Bauer were either incorrect or out of service, and Schreiner did not respond to a message sent by Facebook.

Court records show that Marotta, Schreiner and Bauer signed an agreement in March 2009, with the women agreeing to "hold him harmless" financially. The agreement also said the child's birth certificate would not list a father.

But the state contends the agreement isn't valid because a doctor wasn't involved.

Under a 1994 Kansas law, a sperm donor isn't considered the father only when a donor provides sperm to a licensed physician for artificial insemination of a woman who isn't the donor's wife. The result is an incentive for donors and prospective mothers to work with a doctor, de Rocha said.

"I believe that is the intent of the law, so that we don't end up with these ambiguous situations," she told The Associated Press.

Also, the Kansas Supreme Court ruled in October 2007 that a sperm donor who works through a licensed physician can't legally be considered a child's father ? and doesn't have the right to visit the child or have a role in its upbringing ? absent a formal, written agreement. But the case involved a sperm donor who was seeking access to a child but had only an informal, unwritten agreement with the child's mother.

Linda Elrod, a law professor and director of Washburn University's Children and Family Law program, said the law seems clear: Sperm donors who don't want to be held liable for child support need to work with a doctor.

"Other than that, the general rule is strict liability for sperm," said Elrod, who filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the Supreme Court case.

(AP) ? Google's executive chairman is preparing to travel to one of the last frontiers of cyberspace: North Korea.

Eric Schmidt will be traveling to North Korea on a private, humanitarian mission led by former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson that could take place as early as this month, according to two people familiar with the group's plans who asked not to be named because the visit had not been made public.

The trip would be the first by a top executive from U.S.-based Google, the world's largest Internet search provider, to a country considered to have the most restrictive Internet policies on the planet.

North Korea is in the midst of what leader Kim Jong Un called a modern-day "industrial revolution" in a New Year's Day speech to the nation Monday. He is pushing science and technology as a path to economic development for the impoverished country, aiming for computers in every school and digitized machinery in every factory.

However, giving citizens open access to the Internet has not been part of the North's strategy. While some North Koreans can access a domestic Intranet service, very few have clearance to freely surf the World Wide Web.

It's highly unlikely Google will push to launch a business venture in North Korea, said Victor Cha, a Korea expert who was a senior Asia specialist in the administration of President George W. Bush.

"Perhaps the most intriguing part of this trip is simply the idea of it," said Cha, an analyst with the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank in Washington. Kim Jong Un "clearly has a penchant for the modern accoutrements of life. If Google is the first small step in piercing the information bubble in Pyongyang, it could be a very interesting development."

It was not immediately clear who Schmidt and Richardson expect to meet in North Korea, a country that does not have diplomatic relations with the United States. North Korea has almost no business with companies in the U.S., which has banned the import of North Korean-made goods.

North Korea likely is more interested in Google products such as email, maps and other content, said Lim Eul-chul, a North Korea expert at Kyungnam University in South Korea.

"North Korea has made a lot of investment in science and technology, not just for military purpose but also for the industry and practical reasons," Lim said, predicting that Pyongyang may ask Google to let their experts learn from the U.S. company about upgrading its software and content.

Schmidt has been a vocal advocate of providing people around the world with Internet access and technology.

As Google's chief executive for a decade until 2011, Schmidt oversaw Google's ascent from a small California startup focused on helping computer users search the Internet to a global technology giant making inroads into mobile phone markets as well as mapping.

Google now has offices in more than 40 countries, including all three of North Korea's neighbors: Russia, South Korea and China, another country criticized for systematic Internet censorship.

After being accused of complying with China's strict Internet regulations, known as "the Great Firewall of China," Google pulled its search business from the world's largest Internet market in 2010 by redirecting traffic from mainland China to Hong Kong. The company maintains other businesses in China, but a recent transparency report shows Google's services there sporadically are blocked.

Since stepping aside as CEO, Schmidt has served as Google's executive chairman, largely responsible for the company's external relationships with policymakers, business partners and governments around the world.

And in recent months, Schmidt had been working with Jared Cohen, a former U.S. State Department policy and planning adviser who heads Google's New York-based think tank, on a book about the Internet's role in shaping society. "The New Digital Age" is due to be published in April.

Schmidt's message: The Internet and mobile technology have the power to lift people out of poverty and political oppression.

"The spread of mobile phones and new forms of connectivity offer us the prospect of connecting everybody," he said in commencement speech at Boston University in May. "When that happens, connectivity can revolutionize every aspect of society: politically, socially, economically."

The Richardson-Schmidt trip comes at a delicate time politically. In December, North Korea defiantly shot a satellite into space on the back of a three-stage rocket last month, a launch Pyongyang has hailed as a major step in its quest for peaceful exploration of space.

Washington and others, however, decry it as a covert test of long-range ballistic missile technology designed to send a nuclear-tipped warhead as far as California. The U.N. Security Council quickly condemned the launch, and is deliberating whether to further punish Pyongyang for violating bans on developing its nuclear and missile programs.

The visit also follows North Korea's announcement that an American citizen of Korean descent has been jailed in Pyongyang on suspicion of committing "hostile" acts against the state. Conviction could draw a sentence of 10 years of hard labor under North Korea's penal code.

Kenneth Bae, identified in North Korean state media by his Korean name, Pae Jun Ho, is the fifth American detained in North Korea in the past four years. The exact circumstances of his arrest were not clear. The Korean Central News Agency said he was taken into custody in Rason, a special economic zone in the far north near China and Russia, while touring the area.

Richardson, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations who often serves as an envoy to countries that do not have diplomatic relations with the United States, will try to meet with North Korean officials, and possibly Bae, to discuss the case, the sources said.

Richardson has been to North Korea at least a half-dozen times since 1994, including two trips to negotiate the release of Americans detained by North Korea. His last visit to Pyongyang was in 2010.

Also leading the trip is Kun "Tony" Namkung, an Asian affairs expert who has made numerous visits to North Korea over the past 25 years. Namkung also has been a consultant to the AP.

North Korea and the U.S. fought on opposite sides of a three-year war on the Korean Peninsula before signing a truce in 1953. The Korean Peninsula remains divided by a heavily fortified border, and the U.S. stations 28,000 troops in South Korea to protect the ally.

However, even before late leader Kim Jong Il's death a year ago, North Korea indicated interest in repairing relations with Washington.

Last year, a group of North Koreans even visited Google headquarters in Mountain View, California.

And government-affiliated agencies already use at least one Google product to get state propaganda out to the world: YouTube.
